According to the Administration on Aging, almost 80% of all older persons living alone are women. This is in part due to widowhood and the number of children making geographical changes with their own families. Older women are also at a much greater risk of developing chronic diseases and disabling conditions as they age and women experience depression twice as often as men. While these conclusions are staggering, there is also good news! Changes in physical activity status, more positive self-images, and greater social independence should enable women to take better charge of their health and improve their activity status.
